Legal Updates for 2017- Mark Your Calendar!

2017 is sure to present an interesting and perhaps unpredictable year for employers.  From the injunction granted in the case considering the revised FLSA regulations, to the new sick leave laws in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois, to the Seventh Circuit’s en banc review of whether Title VII covers sexual orientation discrimination. Also focusing on the NLRB’s increasing encroachment into employer policies and agreements, to drug testing in light of now common marijuana use laws, to the new administrations’ approach to immigration and other employment issues, 2017 promises a host of changes.  Please join your fellow professionals and our outstanding panelists for a lively and informative discussion!

Greg Stobbe, SPHR, SCP, JD, Vice President Human Resources and Administration, Kitagawa-NorthTech, Inc.

Since June 1st of this year, Greg has been Vice-President of Human Resources and Administration for this specialty manufacturing company located in Schaumburg, IL. Previous to this, Greg maintained his own independent consulting practice, where he advised, coached and trained clients and their management staffs, across a wide range of HR disciplines, from recruitment through retirement. Greg earned his Juris Doctor Degree from DePaul University’s College of Law.

Rich Mrizek, Trial Attorney, EEOC, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Chicago District

Richard has litigated discrimination cases concerning race, national origin, sex, religion, disability, and retaliation. He has worked on significant class litigation, including, successfully obtaining an $11 million settlement for racial harassment and discrimination claims in EEOC v. Yellow Freight, and a $10 million settlement of racial harassment and discrimination claims in EEOC v. Roadway Express. Prior to joining the EEOC, Rich worked in the Labor and Employment group of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Washington, D.C. He received a B.A. from Northwestern University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.

Chris Cimino, CEO, Chessboard Consulting

For the over 25 years, Chris has been providing clients with strategic employee and labor relations consultation aimed at improving employee satisfaction, boosting organizational performance and lowering vulnerability to union organizing. Today, hundreds of employers in the healthcare, manufacturing, service and financial services industries rely on his advice to foster positive employee relations climates within their organizations.

Laura Liss, Attorney, Patzik, Frank & Samotny Ltd.

Laura is Chair of Patzik Frank and Samotny’s Employment Law Practice Group.  She provides both legal and practical business advice on all phases of employment-related decisions.  She regularly serves as a sounding board for business owners, executives and human resources professionals and assists them in successfully and efficiently navigating the various employment laws that affect their businesses.  One of the initiatives that drew Laura to PFS is the role the firm plays as outside general counsel to many middle market companies.  PFS’s approach to client service appropriately reflects companies’ universal goal to minimize conflicts in the workplace that often lead to costly litigation.
