How to Create an Impactful Internship 

This meeting will be a joint meeting with the Social Media Interest Group.  

How do they do it?  How do companies find amazing interns who join the company full-time upon graduating?  Join us to learn how different types of companies run awesome internship programs and attract great students.  Our speakers will share methods that have proven fruitful year-in and year-out for drawing interest from, and hiring, the best and brightest students determined to succeed in the early part of their careers.

Tom Cicero,
Associate Director, Engineering Career Center, University of Illinois at Chicago

Tom received his BS from Illinois State University in Public Relations.  After graduating, he gained over ten years of experience in technical recruiting on the staffing side.  His focus was in the field of IT, becoming well versed in resumes, interviews and the full recruiting lifecycle.  He has placed engineers in companies like Boeing, Motorola, GE, Google and Honeywell.  At the end of his career in recruiting, Tom became more interested in helping people prepare for their future careers.  After receiving his MS from Northeastern Illinois University in Community Counseling, Tom joined the Engineering Career Center at University of Illinois at Chicago in the fall of 2014 and is currently an Associate Director.

Speakers:
Suraya Shaikh, Human Resources Director, SoCore Energy
As Human Resources Director, Suraya is responsible for attracting, selecting, and retaining top talent at SoCore.  By aligning recruitment strategies with business goals, Suraya partners with hiring managers across the organization to bring highly performing individuals to SoCore. Whether it is building SoCore’s team of experienced professionals from the renewables industry or attracting recent graduates with a passion for energy and sustainability, Suraya plays a key role in growing SoCore’s team and supporting the company’s vision and culture.
Prior to joining SoCore, Suraya developed a background in Human Resources while working for Geneva Trading, a global principal trading firm headquartered in Chicago.  While working in the role of HR Generalist, she gained experience covering the areas of recruitment, benefits, compensation, employee relations, and immigration.
Suraya holds a BS in Management with a focus in Human Resources Management from Purdue University.

Kraig Baker, Talent Attraction Program Manager, Echo Global Logistics

Kraig has been in the HR space for most of his professional career.  He began his HR career as a headhunter for Management Recruiters International, before moving into a recruiter role at McDonald’s Corporation.  During his 7+ years working for the Golden Arches, he took on projects that included revamping their onboarding program, driving all U.S. sourcing strategies, leading the military program, and was a leader in developing the internship program for the U.S. At Echo, he leads various areas of recruiting, including the military, campus, referral, and internship programs.  Kraig lives in downtown Chicago, and loves all that Chicago offers, including playing sports, jogging the lakefront, or volunteering with inner city kids.  You’ll also find him cheering his alma mater’s football team in the fall….The University of Michigan!

Jason Mann, Creative Director, Havas Chicago

Havas CHI, is an advertising agency located in River North.  At Havas, he has been responsible for producing work for clients including Hefty/Reynolds, Citi, DISH Network, Kmart and Liberty Mutual Insurance.  He has also helped oversee the agency’s award-winning intern program for the last four years, including its expansion to offices in New York and Boston.  Prior to Havas, he spent time at Y&R Chicago and a couple of stock imagery houses, including Getty Images.  In a former life, he was an account executive at various ad agencies around town, back when he was young and confused.  A Chicago-area guy, born and bred, Jason graduated from the University of Illinois in 1999 and attended Chicago Portfolio School. 

Katie Dill, Recruiting Manager, Gogo

Katie has always had a passion for working with others and finding the best solutions for helping interpersonal issues.  She was able to explore and grow this passion while she worked to earn her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Iowa.

Upon graduation, Katie worked at a small recruiting agency in the Chicago suburbs.  She really enjoyed recruiting, but had the desire to work for a larger corporation in the technology field.  She found what she was looking for at Gogo, where she has worked for 3 years. 

Katie is very excited to be part of a wonderful organization.  During her time with the company, she has had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Talent Acquisition team within the Human Resources Department.  She has worked with many different teams at Gogo in both the business and technical areas, where she leads not only the campus recruiting efforts, but also oversees the internship program. Katie is always amazed by what the team at Gogo achieves!  She looks forward to continuing to help Gogo reach its goals by finding the best people to join their teams.
