Understanding the elements of total compensation…It’s more than just a dollars discussion with candidates.

The compensation landscape has evolved, it’s not just about base salaries any longer.  In many industries and organizations, employees at all levels now participate in equity programs and incentive pay plans and have access to total rewards and non-compensation perks that affect their total compensation.  This session will help Talent Acquisition professionals understand how to present a competitive offer in this environment.


Frank Kalman, Senior Editor, Human Capital Media Group

Frank Kalman is a Senior Editor at Human Capital Media Group, publisher of three award-winning HR industry trade publications, Chief Learning Officer, Workforce and Talent Management. Frank primarily oversees content development for Talent Management, an HR strategy journal geared toward C-suite talent practitioners. He also moderates Workforce’s traveling speaker series Workforce Live! in addition to contributing content direction and strategy for the other HCM publications. Frank is a 2010 M.S.J. graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, as well as a 2009 graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington.  


Doug Seipel, VP, Rewards and HR Services, Discover Financial

Doug Seipel has been the Vice President of Total Rewards and HR Services of Discover since June 2010.  In this role, Mr. Seipel is responsible for company-wide compensation, benefits, payroll, HR technology, HR shared services, HR communications and HR risk/governance.  Mr. Seipel has also been the lead HR Business Partner to Discover business groups.

Prior to joining Discover, Mr. Seipel was Vice President of Total Rewards at Unisys Corporation.  He has also held a variety of compensation, benefits, and finance roles with companies such as Unisys, Baxter, Sears, eFunds, PLATINUM technologies, and U.S. Robotics.  He began his career as a CPA with Arthur Andersen.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mr. Seipel holds a BBA in Management and Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has served as a Board member of the Chicago Compensation Association, Chair of PRIDE (the Discover LGBT Employee Connection Group), and a member of the Discover Diversity Advisory Board.

Laura Adams, SVP, Human Resources, Jones Lang LaSalle

Laura Adams leads Jones Lang LaSalle’s Corporate Solutions HR Team and is accountable for Latin America. With experience across all our business lines, she operates as a servant leader for our HR Business Partners that are accountable for implementing the talent platform for the businesses’ 8,000 employees.  Laura Adams previously led the Talent Systems function for Jones Lang.  In this role, her team was accountable for the HRIS functionality; ensuring our recruiting efforts draws top talent; and the talent management practices advance the business. In a partnership with the business, Laura helped design and implement the firm’s first commission-based compensation structure for the brokerage community. 

Prior to working for Jones Lang LaSalle, Laura Adams was a Human Resource Business Partner at Washington Mutual.  Her responsibilities included supporting about 1,200 employees in their Technology Solutions Group.  During this role, Laura implemented the competency based performance management program and managed the staffing efforts to align with the consolidation of hundreds of loan origination systems into one firm-wide tool. Prior to that, Laura was a Manager of Human Resources at DiamondCluster International. 

Laura holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame.  She also holds a Strategic Professional Human Resources Certification from the Society for Human Resource Management.

Denise Bindelglass, Senior Human Capital Executive

Denise has spent the majority of her career leading and managing human resources functions and teams for market leading companies based in Chicago. Denise leverages HR as a strategic function, building dynamic leadership programs and initiatives to empower managers and encourage internal career movement, while ensuring total rewards and recognition programs result in a company culture that attracts and retains the best talent.

Most recently, Denise was the VP of HR for Classified Ventures (CV), a consortium-owned business that included several leading digital businesses such as and  Prior to joining CV, Denise served as Chief Human Resources Officer for proprietary trading firm Sun Trading LLC, where she re-engineered the talent acquisition model, introduced new total compensation platforms, built training and development programs and defined strategic plans as part of the senior management team.  With 25 years of HR experience, Denise has primarily held senior internal HR leadership roles across a variety of industries including publishing, eCommerce, software development and financial services, as well as experience in human capital consulting and executive search.

Liz Vellojin, Strategic Recruiting Lead, ContextMedia 

Liz Vellojin has become the blue-chip recruiter for entrepreneurs and has a deep network of the city's most notable tech leaders and influencers. Liz moved to the Chicago in 2004 to join an early stage recruiting start-up and played an integral role in growing the business from a $1.5 million IT recruiting office to a $60 million nationwide division of Addison Group.

In 2012, Liz left Addison and joined Guild Capital as the founder of Argyle Search Partners, a candidate-driven recruitment firm dedicated to the high-growth tech movement in Chicago. As an operating partner, she advised on strategic hiring initiatives for both incubated and pre-IPO businesses. She also helped execute the expansion of the venture fund’s nationwide tech conference, Techweek.  

She currently leads strategic recruiting for one of Chicago’s most admired companies, ContextMedia. ContextMedia appeared on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America in 2013 and 2014, and was recently selected as one of Forbes' Top 50 Most Promising Companies in America.
