The world of performance management and annual reviews, as we know it, is changing. As a new landscape unfolds, to remain competitive and keep employees engaged, organizations will have to redefine their processes, and in some cases, make a cultural shift. The customary rating systems we all know (and have mixed feelings about) have proven to have adverse effects on engagement while remaining ineffective and costly. So how do we, as strategic HR professionals, lead this transformation to provide a more fluid and engaging culture of continuous feedback?

Join us as we tackle this topic in two unique 45 minute sessions:

Part One: Our first session includes a panel of experts to discuss tips and suggestions on implementing these new review methods. Topics include:

  • Linking performance management with employee engagement

  • The impact that an agile review process can have on compensation and business outcomes

  • Legal issues, PIP plans and what to watch out for

Part Two: In our second session we will help those members that are “stuck” with their current review process get the most out of their current system.  To demonstrate fun and interesting ways to engage your employees and managers, the improv professionals from Second City Works will show you how to revitalize your current review processes.

Mark Phelps, Chief Engagement Enthusiast, TNS Employee Insights
Mark leads the TNS consulting department and is a regular speaker at HR conferences and webinars.  He has built expertise around driving innovation and creativity in delivering employee engagement and leadership solutions to operational and senior executives.  Prior to joining TNS, Mark was Practice Leader of Development Dimensions International’s employee engagement consulting area and head of their leadership R&D group. 

Grace Powers, President & CEO, National Able Network, Inc.  

Grace Powers joined National Able Network, Inc., in 2003 as president and CEO. Ms. Powers is responsible for overall management of the Illinois-based nonprofit agency.  She has grown the company revenues more than five-fold while diversifying the funding base, retiring debt, and improving program results.
A seasoned business executive, Ms. Powers carries with her a wide variety of corporate management and military service experience. Before joining Able, she cofounded a wireless software infrastructure firm and, as CEO, led the firm in developing the world's first software platform capable of delivering integrated voice, text, and graphics over wireless.  Prior, Ms. Powers served in multiple executive-level roles at Motorola.
Ms. Powers is also a military veteran with nine years of service as a United States Air Force officer. She worked as a missile design engineer on the MX (Peacekeeper) missile system and as a military jet pilot and aircraft commander with more 2,000 flying hours. Ms. Powers led the first pilot test team evaluating the C-17 cockpit design and served as director for foreign military exercises under the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  She has an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Stanford University and a BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University.

Terry T Creamer, Partner, Franczek Radelet
Terrence (“Terry”) Creamer is a partner in the Labor & Employment and Education Practice Groups at Franczek Radelet.  As a former human resources manager with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Chicago, Terry has the unique ability to view an employer’s labor and employment law challenges with a real, “hands on” perspective. Both public and private sector employers rely upon his legal counsel and guidance on a broad range of labor and employment law matters. He frequently represents clients before the National Labor Relations Board, the Illinois Labor Relations Board, and the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. Terry also advises employers on numerous federal and state employment laws impacting the workplace.

Jason B. Strauss (SPHR).  Director, Human Resources Operations, USG Corporation.

Jason earned a Bachelor of Science in organizational leadership and supervision from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He joined USG in 1999 and his previous assignments include senior manager, human resources operations, USG Corporation; division human resources manager, L&W Supply Company; manager, Employee Relations, USG Corporation; human resources manager, Cloquet, Minn., USG Interiors Inc.; and many similar roles. 

Donna Grant Dorsey, JD, SPHR. Chief Human Resources Officer, Navistar, Inc.

Donna currently serves as Chief Human Resources Office for Navistar, Inc., a leading manufacturer of commercial trucks, buses, defense vehicles and engines with over 10 billion dollars in revenue employing over 14,000 employees globally.  As a senior leader for the company, she is responsible for all aspects of Human Resource strategy.  Donna drives results by providing strategic business and human capital leadership to drive change and innovation during the company’s turnaround.  Prior to this role, she led the strategic HR direction of business operations while overseeing the team of HR Business Partners.  She worked closely with the business leaders to determine the best approaches to leadership and organization development, succession planning, talent development, staffing, total rewards and strategic HR issues.  She previously held roles within Navistar with increasing levels of responsibility including the leadership of Navistar’s Integrated Product Development organization.
Prior to joining Navistar, Dorsey was senior manager, human resources at Sears, Roebuck & Company (now Sears Holding) where she was instrumental at leading the development of people strategies for corporate functions and serving as a leader for diversity initiatives across the enterprise. She has held other positions of increasing responsibility in Human Resources including roles at American Hospital Association, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, and the Chicago Park District
As a leader in both her community and profession, Donna is the former President of the Board of Directors for the national non-profit organization HealthConnect One.  She has received numerous honors including 2013 Illinois Diversity Council’s Most Powerful and Influential Women Award and 2012 Diversity MBA Magazine Top 50 under 50. She has been a speaker on topics ranging from Building Effective People Strategies and Driving Talent Reviews during a turnaround to the power of women of color. In addition, she is a member of the Society Human Resource Management, the Northwest Human Resources Council, the National Association of African American’s in HR, the National Urban League, the American Bar Association and the Illinois Bar Association.  She holds a Paralegal certificate and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  She earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Rutgers University and a Juris Doctorate from Chicago Kent College of Law with a certification in labor and employment law.  While in law school, she was president of Black Law Students Association.
