HRMAC announces Awards of Excellence Recipients

The Board of Directors recently announced winners of the 2014 Awards of Excellence:

  • Leader-of-the-Year: Andrew P. Studdert, Chairman & CEO, NES Rentals
  • Volunteer-of-the-Year: Maureen Conway, Founder, Conway & Associates and Martha Watt, Senior Director, Strategic Services    

Leader of the Year 

In his executive leadership role, Andrew P. Studdert’s consistent focus on his people and the incorporation of Human Capital practices in every aspect of his work.  He has been instrumental in creating a stable and inspiring work environment and a culture focused on trust and the betterment of all employees.  Also he is responsible for turning around NES as a business and making it a great place to work.  His platform for decision-making is based on safety.  His foundation of safety as the link between employees and business success has been the underlying message throughout his career and his impact extends throughout his industry.  

His nomination materials described the numerous examples of how Andy has used a people centered focus to encourage and inspire his employees.  His genuine care for his people and their safety and the safety of the public directs his decisions including:

  • Halting business operations to rectify safety concerns for his employees and the public
  • Establishing an emergency assistance fund to help employees affected by natural disasters and personal hardships which has provided $500,000 to staff since 2004.
  • Creating ‘Walk the Yard with Andy’ opportunities for employees at all facilities to share his vision, personal stories about his battle with cancer, respond to staff concerns and share new employee programs. 
  • Starting a Military Assistance Plan to support employees, spouses, children or grandchildren deployed for service.  The plan includes a training support program for spouses and a supplemental pay plan for employees called to active duty.
  • Supporting internal and external education by increasing tuition reimbursement; facilitating and participating in safety training (ariel lift training, AED, CPR) and assisting a non-profit develop and deploy an automated certification program for safety that he launched to his staff.  He also created the NES Scholarship Program for employees children and grandchildren and created the Jump Start program to help employees children who graduated participate in an internship program.
  • Driving to each of the 70 branch locations of NES after the economic downturn in 2009-10 to encourage and inspire employees to focus on the future.
  • Writing personal notes of congratulations to employees celebrating family moments – graduations, marriages, birth of a child, etc.
  • Establishing a welcome packet for new hires that includes a cookbook from NES employees and a smoke and CO2 detector to protect them and their families at home.
  • Creating a Shared Service Center so employees would have the opportunity to work at home especially during natural disasters and inclement weather.
  • Establishing an unprecedented minimum wage of $15 hour in recognition of the hardships of those hourly employees staring their careers.

Andy continues to identify ways to support and inspire his employees on a daily basis.  

Andy exemplifies all that the Leader of the Year award represents: recognition for a body of work, demonstrates successful collaboration with HR to deploy a people-focused executive strategy to drive business success and is a champion of HR strategy.   

Volunteer of the Year

As long-time and active members, both Maureen Conway and Martha Watt have participated in multiple ways, contributing countless hours to the support of HRMAC.  

Maureen has served in several volunteer roles including leadership positions with the membership committee(as member then Chair) and now in the second year of a two-year term as co-chair of the Transition Interest Group.  During her tenure with the membership committee, she led the group to introduce innovations in our recruitment strategies. As Transition Chair, she collaborates with her committee to produce 10 programs annually for the benefit of our colleagues in transition.  A long-time, active member and supporter of HRMAC, she has a positive impact on the Association and its members.  

Martha is a long time volunteer for the Interest Groups and Committees.  She has participated in the planning activities for countless programs sponsored by the Human Resources Planning and Development and the North/Northwest Suburban Interest Groups.  As a member of the Distance Learning Committee, she collaborated on content development and speaker development and served as program moderator in lead and back-up roles.  Her active support of HRMAC has been instrumental in sponsorship and host services from her employer organizations.   

Maureen and Martha embody the spirit, commitment and passion that this award seeks to recognize.  They are truly ‘unsung heroes’ who have provided distinguished service to further the HRMAC mission.   

Presentation of both awards is planned for 1:00pm during the SUMMIT 2014 general session on October 23.
